Mary Engelbreit
Mary Engelbreit was born on June 5th, 1952 and is currently 73 years old. Mary Engelbreit was born in St. Louis, MO, United States.
Mary Engelbreit is an artist whose illustrations have been printed on cards, books, and calendars.
She attributes her start in art to getting her eyeglasses during second grade and being able to see details of the world all around her clearly for the very first time. After she met her first artist when she was 9 years old, she became convinced that she needed studio space of her own, which her mom helped set up for her in the family linen closet.
Mary started working for Hot Buttered Graphics, a local advertising company. Hoping she could work as an illustrator for children’s books, she shopped her portfolio around New York without success. She started working on greeting cards, and her first nationally distributed greeting card featured a spoonerism which played off an old saying.
Mary’s company, Mary Engelbreit Co., was founded back in 1982. It was located in Webster Groves, Missouri, and then it moved to a former Greek Orthodox church in University City, Missouri, in 1994. By 1996, her company was reporting $86 million in annual sales. Mary’s stores were located in Alpharetta, Georgia; Dallas, Texas; Schaumburg, Illinois; St. Louis, Missouri; and Denver, Colorado.
While her card line grew in popularity and size, it gained attention from other companies that licensed her artwork for use on products such as ceramic figurines, gift books, mugs, T-shirts, fabric, and rubber stamps. In 2016, she launched her line of “Engeldark” greeting cards that featured a snarky sense of humor.
In 1996, she launched Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion, a bi-monthly creative lifestyle magazine, serving as editor-in-chief.
Mary’s had two books land on the
New York Times children's bestseller list, including an edition of
The Night Before Christmas, which hit #5 and her
Mother Goose book which debuted at #6 and was on the bestseller list for four weeks.
Mary Engelbreit’s Mother Goose: One Hundred Best-Loved Verses is a Mother Goose book bursting with humor and warmth.
Here is a highly illustrated hardcover treasury that includes everybody’s favorite time-honored characters: Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill, Old King Cole, and Little Bo Peep, among so many, many more. Readers will enjoy her interpretations of the mouse running up the clock, kids dancing around the mulberry bush, and piggies heading off to the market.
With 100 rhymes in all, each having been lavishly illustrated in her signature style, this collection of time-honored verses is truly a book to behold. Makes for an excellent gift for new parents, baby showers, and other special occasions.
