Marty Glickman
Marty Glickman (Martin Irving Glickman) was born on August 14th, 1917. Marty passed away January 3rd, 2001 at 83 years old. Marty Glickman was born in New York City, NY, USA. Glickman attended Syracuse University.
Marty Glickman was an American athlete and radio announcer. He is famously known as a member of the telecast of the New York Giants football games and the New York Knicks basketball games. In 1996, he published his autobiography
The Fastest Kid on the Block co-written by Stan Isaacs.
The autobiography chronicles his life and readers get to know more about his Olympic experience which lays out the basics of his adult life and the rest of the book. He recounts with great emotion the successes and the failures of nearly seven decades in the sports world.
As the title of this book suggests, Glickman discovered at a young age that he could for sure run faster than his older peers in his neighborhood. But sadly, he also realized that the ability alone wouldn’t always be enough. This notion is asserted when he and Sam Stoller, the only Jewish athletes on the 1936 American Olympic track were dropped at the last minute by their coaches and team officials from the 400-meter relay in the games held that year in Berlin.
But Glickman didn’t let anger get the best of him and instead he went ahead to become one of the best world-class runners and an All-American football player at Syracuse University and eventually a career in broadcasting.
Glickman covered almost everything from hockey to pro wrestling, football, basketball, and baseball. He discusses the freewheeling heyday of radio broadcasting, the early days of television broadcasting as well as the rise of primacy of sports on the American cultural landscape with the same candid style he exhibited in the press box.
In addition, he also shares with readers a series of tales about such sports and broadcasting with legends such as Joe Namath, Wilt Chamberlain, and Howard Cosell (who he criticizes for having always made himself more important than the event). Glickman is not shy and touts his own accomplishments especially with his role in the growth of HBO where he worked as a sports director.
Glickman doesn’t gloss over his mistakes like his self-doubt to acknowledge that college basketball in the late 1940s and early 1950s was highly tainted by gambling. Overall,
The Fastest Kid on the Block is an honest and fascinating memoir by a remarkable reporter.
