She and her husband John also made critical public statements about the excommunications and other BYU and church matters, which led to John first, and then Martha leaving the church in 1993.

Leaving the Saints: How I Lost the Mormons and Found My Faith is quite an unforgettable memoir about a woman’s spiritual quest and journey toward faith. Martha, as royalty within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was raised in this home frequented by the Church’s high elders, known as the apostles, and her existence was framed by their strict code of conduct. Wearing sacred garments, she got married in this secret temple ceremony, however only after these two Mormon leaders had ascertained her past zero flirting with serious sins, like drinking coffee or committing murder. Martha would go to church regularly with the other sisters and brothers of her ward.
Her son was born with Down syndrome, she and her husband left their graduate programs at Harvard and went back to Provo, Utah, where they knew the supportive Mormon community would support them.
But not too long after she started teaching at BYU, she started seeing the Church’s ruthlessness firsthand as it silenced dissidents and would mask truths which contradicted its published beliefs. The most troubling of all was that she was forced to confront her history of sexual abuse by one of the Church’s most prominent of authorities.
She chronicles her tough choice to ultimately sever her relationship with the faith which had cradled her for so very long and to face and forgive the one person that had betrayed her so very deeply.
