My friends and I discussed Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly at great length. We couldn’t agree on whether or not the book was necessary. But we had a fruitful discussion.

I don’t know where I fall. The book is beautifully written. I understand people who think that stories about the holocaust are a dime a dozen today and that the subject has been dissected to death.

But I also agree with people who think that contemporary readers must be encouraged to rediscover the atrocities of the holocaust. Otherwise, history may repeat itself.

I suppose my friends and I are overthinking the issue. We should just enjoy the novel for what it is.
