I don’t do character-driven literary fiction. My brain doesn’t understand such books because they tend to meander aimlessly. But Marilynne Robinson is slowly forcing me to change my tune.

I heard about ‘Housekeeping’ for years before I read it. The book was so popular among some of my friends that I skipped it and bought ‘Gilead’ once I decided to experiment with this author’s work. The hype surrounding ‘Housekeeping’ annoyed me.

‘Gilead’ did not disappoint. I expected a tiresome, jaded, cynical exploration of faith in America. But it was a gentler, more optimistic story. It encouraged me to give ‘Housekeeping’ a shot. And even though it was written decades before ‘Gilead,’ ‘Housekeeping’ is the superior novel.

Again, the book has no plot. But I was still engaged by the story. Robinson deserves all the accolades.
