The person who recommended Leigh Russell to me commended the author for her skillful characterization and plotting. But they made the mistake of lending ‘Cut Short’ to me, making it the first Leigh Russel novel I’ve ever read. The book was decent, but it felt somewhat formulaic, and Geraldine was the typical miserable detective, the kind you find in every police procedural.
I only stuck with Russell because I learned, later on, that ‘Cut Short’ was the author’s debut novel. So, I can forgive some of the weaknesses in the book. And each Leigh Russel novel I’ve read since then has only gotten stronger. Geraldine has grown on me.
Every time she runs home to drink on her own, you can’t help but pity her. You want her to grow, to find some happiness. Though, her personal story doesn’t necessarily sideline the mysteries and cases, which I appreciate.
