I struggled with Malpas at the start. Someone recommended ‘This Man.’ Maybe they shouldn’t have praised the series so passionately because it failed to meet my expectations.
Jesse was the biggest problem. I couldn’t stand him. To provide context, I have encountered plenty of lovable alpha males in fiction, but Jesse was too much. His controlling attitude crossed so many lines.
I pushed on from book one to book two, but only because my friend begged me to persevere. Still, Jesse wasn’t working for me. Book three changed everything. I don’t know why I didn’t see it before. I re-read the first two novels after finishing book 3, and I finally took note of Jesse’s incredible arc.
Now I count myself among Maplas’ fans. It took a while, but I finally recognized the genius of her style. I can’t wait to devour more of her work.
