James Buchanan
James Buchanan (James Buchanan Jr.) was born on April 23rd, 1791. James passed away June 1st, 1868 at 77 years old. James Buchanan was born in Cove Gap, Pennsylvania, USA. Buchanan attended Dickinson College.
James Buchanan was secretary of state from 1845 to 1849 and represented Pennsylvania in both houses of the US Congress. He was also president of the United States for just a term from 1857 until 1861.
James advocated for states’ rights, especially in regards to slavery, and minimized the role that the federal government played just before the American Civil War.
He was an attorney in Pennsylvania and won his first election as a Federalist to the state’s House of Representatives. He got elected to the US House of Representatives in 1820 and retained this post for a total of 5 terms, aligning with Andrew Jackson’s Democratic Party. James served as Jackson’s minister to Russia in 1832 before winning the 1834 election as a US senator from Pennsylvania and continued in this position for a total of 11 years. He got appointed to serve as secretary of state for President James K. Polk in 1845 and 8 years later got named President Franklin Pierce’s minister to the United Kingdom.
Starting in 1844, he was a regular contender for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. He got nominated and wound up winning the 1856 Presidential election. While he was President, he intervened to assure the Supreme Court’s majority ruling in the pro-slavery decision in the Dred Scott case. He acceded to Southern efforts to engineer Kansas’ entry into the Union as a slave state under Lecompton Constitution, and angered both Republicans as well as Northern Democrats.
His leadership during his lame duck period, just before the American Civil War, has been widely criticized. He both angered the North because he didn’t stop secession and the South by not yielding to their demands.
Mr. Buchanan’s Administration on the Eve of the Rebellion is a memoir of his presidential years, and James sets out his version of the facts. What happened during those fateful years which led up to the total collapse of relations between the South and North? This is an essential volume for those that seek a better comprehension of the politics of the Civil War era.
James Buchanan was the 15th President of the United States, serving just a single term from 1857-1861. He was an advocate for the rights of individual states, particularly in the issue of the abolition of slavery. His actions are scrutinized for contributing to the tensions which led to the Civil War’s outbreak. He was the only US president to be a lifelong bachelor.
