Science fiction doesn’t interest me in the least. But I love military history. My brothers and I spend hours every weekend re-enacting major historical conflicts on a small scale (using models).

I came across John Campbell while researching authors with a military background. As a former US Navy Officer, I was curious to see how Campbell’s experience would influence his work.

So far, he hasn’t disappointed me. My friends would probably criticize him for describing the space battles in excruciating detail. I love it. Honestly, I would happily read a fictional textbook from Campbell on the strategies and tactics of space warfare in the Lost Fleet series. I still don’t care for science fiction, but Campbell is the exception.

The first series I read by Jack Campell was The Pillars of Reality. In the debut novel, Alain and Mari met when the caravan they were traveling in was attacked and found it hard to trust each other.
Campell creates compelling characters that the reader can’t help but like. In The Vanguard novel, the author comes up with men and women who do the right thing even when it’s too difficult. I highly recommend it, and it’s worth reading.
He also tries using real physics in space battles. The character development in all his novel is top-notch.
There is a lot of action in the novels, and it uses complex politics in numerous words.
