Horatius Bonar

Horatius Bonar was born on December 19th, 1808. Horatius passed away May 31st, 1889 at 80 years old. Horatius Bonar was born in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Horatius Bonar was a Scottish poet and church leader famously known for his hymns. He lived the same time as Robert Murray M’Cheyne and was nicknamed Horace Bonar by his friends. As a licensed preacher, Bonar worked on missions in Leith. In 1837, he became a minister of the North Church in Kelso and soon became famous across Scotland.

Light and Truth: Bible Thoughts and Themes books offer a deep exploration of the life and legacy of Bonar. He was a steadfast supporter of the evangelistic effort and a close friend to influential people like D.L. Moody. These books offer deeper insights into Bonar’s role in the spiritual awakenings that spread like bushfire across Scotland in the 1830s and 1840s. His commitment to evangelism was evident during the “Great Disruption” of 1843 after he joined others in a breakaway from the Church of Scotland to create the Free Church of Scotland.

His hymns are considered the cornerstone of his ministry and the books highlight his ability to craft important theological truth into beautiful verse which resulted in timeless hymns like O Love of God, How Strong and True, and “Glory Be to God the Father” . Each hymn is a reflection of his deep understanding of the doctrine.

The books also delve into Bonar’s pastoral heart and preaching. After two decades in Kelso, he went back to Edinburgh to minister at Chalmers Memorial Chapel. Even in his last years, he remained active and helped Moody organize meetings and served as a moderator of the Free Church.

Bonar also wrote a collection, titled How Shall I Go to God?. The collection is a reminder to readers of the simplicity and power of God’s grace. The main theme is simple and clear: if you ask, God will give you living water, free and without hesitation. The book emphasizes the sincere truth of God’s love, a love that does not depend on our goodness but is based on His boundless mercy and kindness.

The author uses vivid imagery and words that compel to reassure the readers that Christ invites the weary and provides rest to those burdened by life. He explains that it is never our worthiness that draws God to us but our need and that’s what makes us receive His and His love is what meets our needs.

The book also describes gifts of peace, forgiveness, and life as riches from heaven that are given to us freely by God. The gifts are given to use for free and Bonar encourages readers to abandon feelings of unworthiness and put their trust in the work of Jesus.

Overall, Living Water is an inspiring book ideal for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of God’s love and grace.
