Holly Martin’s books are magical. I cannot think of a better word to describe them.
Christmas at Lilac Cottage was a little odd. It was the first Martin novel I read and I couldn’t stand it because of the insta love component.
I hate romance novels that rely on love at first sight to hook readers. I prefer a slow build where the protagonists get to know each other over the course of several chapters before realizing their feelings for one another.
I call Christmas at Lilac Cottage odd because I hated it but I still read to the end. And once I was done, I couldn’t wait to read more. Now I know Holly Martin’s secret. Her stories are predictable and she keeps using the insta-love trope. But you can’t help but forgive her because her characters are so endearing.
Information about the author and the Jewel Island series:
Holly Martin has a lovely life, living in a sweet little white cottage by the sea where she creates the series of stories that are hugely popular. She majored in Media at university.
Ms. Martin says that her education led her to a “glitzy” career as a hotel receptionist. Later she had a “glamorous two years” working in a bank. The lightbulb moment to change careers came when a fellow employee, after fifteen years of work at the bank, received a carriage clock.
She left the banking job and added teacher training to her education. After three years Ms. Martin was terrified but determined to be the adult who was going to be responsible for thirty young minds.
Ms. Martin taught for four years and but decided to leave and teach workshops in history. This position was a lot of fun. She dressed up as a Viking then another day as an Egyptian High Priestess.
Ms. Martin loved the job, but the extensive traveling around the UK allowed her time to write stories in her head. Now she can write full-time and the stories pour out of her.
Ms. Martin has been writing for eight years. In that short time she has garnered a wealth of nominations and awards. A short story of hers won the Sunlounger competition and she was published in the Sunlounger anthology.
Ms. Martin’s novel The Guestbook won the Carina Valentine’s competition during the Festival of Romance. She’s been shortlisted for Best eBook, Innovation in Romantic Fiction, Best Romantic Read, all at the Festival in Romance 2014.
Ms. Martin has had her books published worldwide and has sold over a million. The books have been translated into Russian, Turkish, Estonian, Bulgarian, Dutch, Italian, German, and French.
In the Jewel Island Series each book is a story about a separate couple so each novel can be enjoyed as a standalone. With each series set in the same place, you can enjoy them more if you read the whole series in order.
In her Jewel Island Series the first three books focus on Sapphire, Ruby, and Emerald, three sisters, Aria, Clover, and Sky are featured in each book. They are great as a stand-alone but they are linked as you will see the sisters in each of the three stories.
In Ms. Martin’s first story of the Jewel Island series, Sunrise Over Sapphire Bay, will have you falling in love with the amazing Jewel Island. It’s summer and the sea is a sparkling sapphire. The sun is warm and the kind and generous islanders will endear themselves to you.
The first couple we meet is Aria Philips and Noel Campbell. Aria’s been there all her life although her sisters have escaped to bigger and better things. Aria chose to stay and help her father in the family’s hotel.
It’s been a year since her father’s death and she has done all she can to keep the hotel running but it’s been a struggle. The hotel has had a struggle making a profit and the small number of guests increase the risk of losing the only home she knows.
Noah Campbell is in the business of making hotels successful. He’s made his fortune helping out failing hotels. He, by coincidence, happens to be visiting Jewel Island. Maybe he is her chance for success.
She fell for him before she knew of his life. But he kissed her under a willow tree and then never called her again. He thought it was the most amazing kiss of her whole life. She decided business and pleasure shouldn’t ever be mixed.
Noah is charming and handsome but Aria is determined to maintain a professional relationship while he is helping with the hotel. He has a secret he’s been keeping and it could change her life forever.
Ms. Martin’s second novel in the Jewel Island series is Autumn Skies Over Ruby Falls. She takes us to the lovely Cornish coast with this truly romantic treat.
Clover Phillips has returned home, back on Jewel Island. She’s teaching dance at the Sapphire Bay Hotel, a site of beauty and relaxation. She co-owns the hotel with her sisters Aria and Skye. She feels her life is full and complete, all but for one thing…
Clover left London and in doing so, she left a devastating betrayal. The pain has been such that she hasn’t wanted to date anyone and absolutely won’t consider falling love with anyone.
Clover thinks a little fling will break the ice around her heart. Possibly she could ease into romance and her luck is that a very handsome man, Angel Mazzeo has returned to town.
The chemistry between the two is obvious and Angel’s willing to be her friend but he’s also very willing to be more to her if she feels up to dating. With love off the table, things between the two should be easy. It’s unplanned but the magic is apparent and it’s taking them from the friend zone to romance. They just have to have the courage to talk to each other and share their inner feelings.
