Frank W. Abagnale
Frank W. Abagnale (Frank William Abagnale Jr.) was born on April 27th, 1948 and is currently 77 years old. Frank W. Abagnale was born in Bronxville, New York, USA.
Frank Abagnale is best known as a security consultant and former con artist whose life inspired the movie
Catch Me If You Can. He is also the author of a bestselling book by the same name.
Frank was just 15 when he stole the neighbor’s car and was arrested leaving his father with a massive bill of up to $3,400. As a twenty-year-old, he moved to Louisiana, where he convinced a minister to host him as he claimed to be a former pilot, only for the man to grow suspicious and have him arrested after he tried to confirm his identity.
The authorities also found him in possession of stolen bank checks which resulted in a 12 year probation. He never served his probation as he fled America and headed to Europe where he continued defrauding people and spent two months in prison before he was sent back to the US.
Back in the US, he pretended to be a deadhead pilot schtick for
Pan Am and moved across colleges pretending to be a recruiter of stewardesses for Pan Am. Portraying himself as part doctor and part pilot, he also convinced many unsuspecting young women to undergo weird physical exams to join the nonexistent program.
Things went haywire for Abagnale when he started forging and cashing
Pan Am paychecks which got him on the radar of the
FBI. After he was arrested in 1970, he was sentenced to 12 years but got out after serving two. It was after his stint in prison that he gave up crime and started a family.
Shortly after getting out of prison and starting a family, Abagnale founded
Abagnale and Associates, a consulting firm that offers advice to clients on aspects of document storage and fraud. He is also a well-sought-after speaker who gives his story at conventions across the United States.
Frank Abagnale published his debut work
Catch Me If You Can in 1980. The work chronicles his notorious but brief career as a criminal. During his short career, he pretended to be a sociology professor, practiced law without being licensed, copiloted a
Pan Am jet, and forged and cashed more than $2.5 million in checks.
The Art of the Steal is a work that tells of Frank Abagnale’s more than twenty-five years as a fraudster and ingenious con man. It comes with real-life stories of the scams he committed and how they could have been prevented. He also gets his readers into the mind and world of the con artist, which can help prevent them from becoming the next victims of scams.
In 2007, Frank published
Stealing Your Life, a work in which he looks into the issues of identity theft and explains how easy it is for people to have their identities stolen. He also explains how identity theft works, the consequences of someone having their identity stolen, and how to protect oneself from becoming a victim of the crime.
