Flo Groberg
Flo Groberg is best known as a retired US Army officer who now works for the United States Department of Defence.
He received his commission as an infantry officer in 2008, before being made platoon leader in the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado. In 2009, he was sent on tour to the Middle East and was in charge of the Pech River Valley as part of
Task Force Lethal.
When Flo Groberg returned to the United States in 2010, he was made an infantry company executive officer. Following that, he was promoted to commander of the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in charge of a personal security detachment.
In 2012, he was again deployed to Kunar Province, where he was promoted to Captain. During a patrol, he noticed a lone civilian approaching the formation wearing a suicide vest. He tackled the suicide bomber who detonated his device.
Due to Flo Groberg’s actions, he prevented many injuries and possibly deaths. However, he lost half his left calf muscle, which sustained massive nerve damage, had a mild brain injury, and a blown eardrum. After recovering from his injuries in 2015, he was honourably discharged on medical grounds.
For his work, he was honoured with several decorations and awards, including the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Purple Heart, and the US Army Ranger Tab.
In 2017, Flo Groberg published a memoir titled
8 Seconds of Courage about his life and times.
He tells how he left his home country, France, and moved to the United States in his youth. He would then join the infantry, where he had to endure intensive training but developed strong bonds of brotherhood with his fellow soldiers.
Flo shares about his rise through the ranks before he was sent to Afghanistan as a commander. During a routine patrol, he spotted a suicide bomber and, without second thought, tackled the man, and in seconds the bomb exploded.
His action saved many lives but left him badly injured. Flo would then have a painful and long recovery in hospital over months, where he showcases both strength and doubt. The work shows that courage comes from teamwork, duty, and the choice to act at the most critical times.
