Thanks a lot for this comprehensive booklist on author Faith Martin. While Faith has many novels I love the DI Hillary Greene series the best.
The series of novels is set in Oxford where the lead is an unlikely but sassy hero who enters into an exciting crime partnership in the debut novel of the series Fatal Obsession.
The novel and much of the series are set in the 1960s where women detectives were deemed superfluous to requirements as most detectives were male dinosaurs. Going against convention, Martin pitts a middle aged school coroner and a 19 year old newbie policewoman against a ruthless murder and the cynical top brass of the force.
What results from this is an explosive mix of a whodunit that is marked by the stunning turns and twists and labyrinthine plotting that have been Martin’s trademark style for years.
I found the detective delightfully eccentric as he works without modern technologies but still manages to do his job very effectively.
I think I read the D.I. Greene books nearly two decades ago, shortly after they came out. I can’t remember. I was quite young at the time. ‘Murder on the Oxford Canal’ sounded so familiar when I read it a few months ago. I thought it was a coincidence.
But then I moved on to ‘Murder at the University,’ and the same thing happened. My librarian told me that Faith’s publisher re-packaged the D.I. Greene novels before re-releasing them, which explains a lot.
Not that I’m complaining. Greene is an entertaining protagonist. I have enjoyed following the detective on her journey as she attempts to wrangle her personal demons.
