I don’t know anything about Deborah Crombie. I’ve never been tempted to read her biography. But after reading several Kincaid/Gemma novels, I have to assume she’s British.

Why? Because her books are extremely British. These cozy mysteries tick every box I associate with British cozy mysteries. That isn’t a criticism. These days, most of my friends want the novels they read to subvert every expectation.

But I disagree with that mindset. I love authors like Crombie because they have a keen understanding of who they are and what they write. I continue to buy the Kincaid/Gemma novels because I know what to expect from them. I like that element of predictability. The tight plotting and clever mysteries are a bonus.

Reading the Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James books was my first introduction to books set in the UK.I have since read several more authors and follow them as well. I sometimes believe I could find my around several different places. So looking forward to another chapter in the lives of these wonderful characters.

I am re-reading Crombie’s books. I love the descriptions of the countryside as the investigations take place in places other than London. This second reading is even better than the first.

If sitting down with a detective/mystery story is wrong, I don’t want to be right! Deborah Crombie is an author I will be adding to my life of authors to read and watch out for ever since reading A Share in Death, which is the first in the Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James series.

Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and Sergeant Gemma James are on a murder case and the two must work together to figure out (as usual) who has done it. When a second body is found, they know that they’ve got to get going before the killer strikes again. This is a book on par with the well-told detective stories out there and worth a read, especially if you really like mystery thrillers.
