I approached Eric Jerome Dickey with a lot of skepticism. He caught my eye when news of his death started circulating in 2021. For an author whose name had never crossed my path, the flood of adoration from fans and critics alike surprised me.

So I decided to dip my toes into Eric’s bibliography. Usually, I avoid authors like this because they deal in black suffering, either obsessing over or glorifying the ills of black people.

But Eric surprised me. His stories did not shy away from the darker aspects of life for black people in the US. But they also had a lot of heart and sincerity. I would argue that he told stories about black people that the publishing industry has ignored for far too long. I can see my young nieces and nephews discovering his work in their teenage years and falling in love with his style the way I did a few months ago.
