Elizabeth Peters is one of my favorite and creative writers who keep me engaged with gothic mysteries. In Malice Domestic series, she tells a story about a detective trying her best to solve mysteries of the poisoning of the pigeons and theft of an heirloom pearl necklace. The author creates a fascinating story is with a taste of devoured scenery. I loved the Amelia Peabody series in that it’s unique, and each book is standalone. Its setting is at an archeological dig in Egypt and involves a mysterious mummy. Amelia Peabody is quite a character as she is tough, intelligent, loyal, and a feminist of her time. I liked how she could get herself down while trying to uncover, discover and fix the artifacts.
Like most children, I wanted to buy a set of hats and whips before running off on my very own Indiana Jones-inspired adventure. Archeology sounded like the coolest job. Sadly, the career wasn’t an option where I lived. Also, I spent enough time reading about the subject to realize that Archeology wasn’t quite as glamorous as I thought.
Nonetheless, I love the Amelia Peabody books because they remind me of my childhood. I keep waiting for Amelia to stumble onto a real mummy, the kind that walks around killing people and summoning curses.
But that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the mysteries Amelia has to solve. She’s a fascinating character. I don’t know if the 1800s were that interesting or if the era is only appealing because of Amelia’s exaggerated perspective.
Elizabeth Peters writes excellent novels that take place in Egypt. I have always enjoyed books about Egypt and life back in older times. These mysteries sure fit the bill. I just wish she had written more Amelia Peabody novels.
I am so sorry that Elizabeth Peters is no longer with us. Her books were so entertaining with all the Egyptian facts and interesting story lines. And her characters were outstanding!!!
