Doyle Brunson was a renowned professional poker player who was the winner of 10 World Series of Poker tournaments before he retired in 2018.
Initially, Doyle dreamed of becoming a professional basketball player in the NBA. However, a knee injury while playing college football put an end to his playing days, and he decided to leave his home state altogether.
After moving to Las Vegas, he quickly becAme one of the most reputable high stakes poker players. He was the first citizen to win $1 million in poker tournaments, and over the years, he won more than $6 million in live tournaments he took part in.
Doyle Brunson would become a mainstay of the
World Series of Poker tournaments that were becoming very popular during his time. The 10 tournament winning bracelets he won as a player made him one of the best, only bettered by Phil Hellmuth, who had 16.
The highest watermark of Doyle Brunson’s career was when he won the 1976 and 1977
WSOP main events. His starting hand in both years was 10-2, which has made those hands come to be known as
The Doyle Brunson or sometimes as
The Texas Dolly, which happens to be another name he was known by.
During his heyday, Brunson was so formidable that when he was eliminated from the main event, it would be announced to all the players. When he was eliminated from his last
WSOP in 2018 at the last table, he got a standing ovation while he left the room.
The Hall of Famer published the first of his seminal works,
Super System, in 1979. Drawing from his own experiences and those of other greats, he provides readers with well thought out techniques and solid strategies the professionals use to become successful in any time of card game.
The work also includes insights into how he became the best and the errors and trials that led to the development of his systems.
In 2005, Doyle Brunson published a follow-up to his work in
Super System 2. Yet again, it comes with an extensive guide to different strategies for card games from different experts in the game. Aside from the strategies, it also explores aspects such as bankroll management, poker psychology, and how to be successful despite the evolution of the poker landscape.
