I am a huge fan of the works of Dorothea Benton Frank that usually feature families in conflict, and complex yet strong women.
I have always felt that her novels hark back to her upbringing in the South Carolina Lowcountry where she was brought up on Sullivan’s Island.
My favorite of her novels has to be Sullivan’s Island. The novel tells the tale of woman having to deal with betrayal from her husband. She decides to put the past behind her and coming back with a teenage daughter rebuilds her life in the small town where she had been brought up.
I do believe I never came across the Lowcountry Tales series of novels as they are beach reads. Most of the bigger publications such as The New Yorker and the Times typically do not review such books. Nonetheless, once I read the first I have been hooked and been reading through the series.
My first impression of Dorothea was wrong. Well, no, that isn’t true. It was right. I just did not expect to enjoy what she was offering. I remember reading the synopsis for ‘Sullivan’s Island’ and thinking that she was retracing well-trodden ground.
I could name dozens of novels that chronicled the lives of middle-aged women that had to find their true selves after their husbands abandoned them for younger women. But Dorothea won me over.
‘Sullivan’s Island’ was, more or less, what I expected. But the author’s style is incredible. She had a way of describing the setting that made me feel like I was standing next to her characters. This is the primary reason why I keep reading her work. She takes concepts I have encountered before and elevates them.
