Cupcake Brown is a San Francisco-based lawyer, motivational speaker, and memoirist best known for her debut work
A Piece of Cake, which she publisehd in 2006 to much critical acclaim.
Brown had to endure and beat extraordinary challenges to become what she is today. Following the sudden death of her mother when she was 11, she was sent to a foster home where she was subjected to sexual exploitation and drugs, among other things.
During her time at the foster home, she often got involved in street life as she battled addiction, sold drugs, and became a member of a gang. She was homeless, was raped and survived a near fatal shooting incident as she just could not seem able to escape the destructive cycle.
After numerous relapses, it was in 1989 that she realized she had to change or die following a brutal attack. Working with her employer, she was sent to rehab but still relapsed several times before she finally used her mentorship and faith to rebuild her life.
Cupcake Brown now works as a white collar crime and corporate law practitioner in addition to being a much sought after speaker.
Cupcake Brown’s memoir,
A Piece of Cake chronicles her journey from crime and addiction to a high-powered lawyer.
Orphaned as a child, she was left in the hands of a sadistic foster parent and had to survive by turning tricks and ingesting drugs and hard liquor while hitchhiking in California. She would then become a gang member, engage in theft and prostitution before she got into 9-5 jobs.
Brown is candid about her experiences, even as she offers insights into her actions and behavior. All in all, it is an account full of redemption, pain, and hope as one woman is determined to make it despite her circumstances.
