In 2009, Romesha was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 61st Cavalry Regiment, and deployed to Combat Outpost Keating in Afghanistan. When the Taliban attacked the base, Romesha was credited for rallying his team and leading a counterattack while providing cover fire to help the wounded reach the first aid station.
