In an interview with Lesa's Book Critiques, Alice stated that the inspiration came from when she lives in the East Village in New York, after moving from Pennsylvania. The small apartment she shared was above a coffee shop and bakery which was called Bread and Roses and that was the inspiration for the series.

Does Marc write the male characters and Alice the female characters?

No. Alice has clarified this in the past. As an example, Mark has written scenes featuring the likes of Clare Cosi and Penelope Thornton-McClure, while Alice has written scenes with Mike Quinn and Matt Allegro.
