Bob Dole

Bob Dole was born on July 22nd, 1923. Bob passed away December 5th, 2021 at 98 years old. Bob Dole was born in Russell, Kansas, United States. Dole attended Washburn University where he received a BA and an LLB.

Bob Dole was an attorney and politician who represented Kansas in the United States Senate from 1969 to 1996. Bob was the Republican Leader of the Senate during the last 11 years of his tenure, which included three non-consecutive years as Senate Majority Leader.

Before his 27 years in the Senate, he served in the US House of Representatives from 1961 to 1969. Bob was also the Republican presidential nominee in the 1996 election and the VP nominee in the 1976 election.

He was born and grew up in Russell, Kansas, where he established a legal career after he served with distinction in the US Army during the Second World War.

After a period as Russell County, Kansas Attorney, he won election to the House of Representatives in 1960.

In 1968, he was elected to the Senate, serving as chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1971 to 1973 and as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee from 1981 until 1985.

Bob led the Senate Republicans from 1985 up until he resigned in 1996, and from 1985 until 1987, he served as Senate Majority Leader and then again from 1995 to 1996. While he was the Republican leader, he helped defeat the Clinton health care plan of 1993, which Democratic President Bill Clinton had proposed.

One Soldier's Story: A Memoir is Bob Dole telling his legendary World War II story in his own words. It's a personal odyssey of tremendous sacrifice, bravery, and faith.

Bob recites the inspirational and moving tale about his harrowing experience in World War II, and exactly how he was able to overcome life-threatening injuries long before he rose to the top of the US Senate. As a platoon leader in the famed 10th Mountain Division, Bob Dole (age 21) got gravely wounded on a hill in the Italian Alps only 2 weeks before the war's end.

Attempting to pull his radioman to safety during the firefight against a fortified German position, he got hit with shrapnel across his back and right shoulder. Over the following 3 years, never expected to survive, he lapsed in and out of a coma, lost usage of his right arm and most of the feeling in his left, and lost a kidney. However, he willed himself to live.

Drawing upon almost 300 never-before-seen letters between him and his family during this time, he offers a vivid and powerful portrait of a man's struggle to survive in the war's closing moments. He also focuses, with candor and insight, on the actions, words, and selfless deeds of numerous American heroes with whom he served.
