Billy Ray Cyrus is an American country singer and actor from Flatwoods, Kentucky. Initially, he thought he would become a professional baseball player and even earned a scholarship, but he discovered that he liked music more.
He ultimately formed
Sly Dog, the band, and in 1991, he was signed to
Mercury Records after he opened for Reba McEntire. His first album was highly popular and sold millions of copies, and topped many national and international charts.
Achy Breaky Heart, the lead single of
Some Gave All, topped pop and country charts and resulted in a viral line dancing craze that made Billy Ray Cyrus popular all over the US. The popularity of the song, which also had a very memorable video, got him nominated for several Grammys, even though several purists did not like it.
For much of the 1990s, Billy Ray Cyrus continued to release music that would garner critical acclaim. He would then become an actor as he stated in
Hannah Montana as Robby Ray Stewart alongside Miley Cyrus, his daughter. Between 2001 and 2004, he also starred in
Doc.
Later, he produced more music and appeared in films such as
The Spy Next Door and the reality TV show
Dancing with the Stars. He has also been featured on records with artists such as Lil Nas X and Snoop Dogg.
After his divorce from Tish Cyrus, his longtime wife, he got engaged to Firerose, the Australian singer.
In 2012, Billy Ray Cyrus published the work
Hillbilly Heart in which he tells of his life and times from his childhood all the way to becoming a huge country music star.
As a child, he found refuge in sports and music following the divorce of his parents. While he is better known for his pranks than his playing, once he got his hands on a guitar and started a band, he became a rebel with a cause.
A decade later, after knocking on the doors of countless music executives on both coasts and working the club circuit, he was signed by
Mercury Records and became a multi-platinum selling artist who was massively popular in the US and on the international stage.
