Berkeley Breathed
Berkeley Breathed (Guy Berkeley Breathed) was born on June 21st, 1957 and is currently 68 years old. Berkeley Breathed was born in Encino, California, USA.
Berkeley Breathed is a children’s book author, cartoonist, director, and screenwriter that is best known for such comic strips as
Opus,
Bloom County, and
Outland. Bloom County earned him a 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning.
He was first published when he got hired part time by the
Austin American-Statesman to draw editorial cartoons for the paper. The job was a shortlived one, since he got dismissed shortly after a cartoon (depicting a busing order imposed on the local school system) caused some outrage.
The Academia Waltz was his first regularly published comic strip, and appeared in
the Daily Texanin 1978 while he was a student at the University of Texas. During his time at the University of Texas, he self-published two collections of
The Academia Waltz, using the money he made to pay for his tuition. The comic strip attracted notice from the editors of
the Washington Post, who recruited Berkeley to do a nationally syndicated strip for them.
Bloom County made its debut in December of 1980. It featured a number of characters from
Academia Waltz. When it started, the strip was quite similar to
Doonesbury. He has stated that he borrowed liberally from
Doonesbury early in his career.
Bloom Countywould appear in 1,200 papers around the world until he retired the strip in 1989, wanting to end the strip while it was still popular.
In 2008, he decided to conclude all his comic strips so that he could focus on writing children’s books.
In order to see the final panel of the
Opus strip, you had to open a link. The final panel showed Opus sleeping in bed like at the end of
Goodnight Moon.
He said he had no regrets leaving political cartooning, believing the atmosphere became too bitter for him to create quality cartoons.
Berkeley returned to Bloom County in 2015, and published new cartoons to Facebook on a near daily basis in 2018.
Opus: Complete Sunday Strips from 2003-2008 is Berkeley’s last spin around the dance floor with his most endearing and quirky character, Opus. The Pleasant Penguin has long been the moral center of the Berkeley-verse, and nowhere is this as abundantly obvious as in his own self-named book.
Aside from our waddling buddy, this book contains many characters that readers are fondly going to recall from the days of Bloom County. It collects up all of Opus, from start to finish, and features an introduction and even a running commentary from Berkeley.
