The mysteries I read do not shy away from the darker, more violent aspects of life. I associate lighthearted mysteries with the cozy mystery genre, which I tend to ignore. Ann Granger was my first foray into lighthearted traditional mystery.

I remember reading ‘The Companion’ and noting that it was a little too dry. Granger inserted historical facts into the novel in ways that did not serve the story. That was my thought back then.

I don’t know if that is true anymore because every other historical fiction novel from Granger I’ve read since then has thoroughly entertained me. ‘The Companion’ was my first historical fiction book. Maybe I needed time to adapt to the genre. Either way, I now have a taste for historical mysteries, and I want more.
