Regina Hall starred as Lisa Carter, K.J. Apa as Chris Bryant, Anthony Mackie as King, and the rapper known as Common starred Carlos. The film began a limited release in the United States on October 5, 2018, and then released worldwide on October 19. Kian Lawley was originally set to play as Chris Bryant but was later recast after a video of his use of racially offensive slurs resurfaced, a month later the role was given to K.J. Apa. The film was nominated for and won numerous accolades including the BET Award, NAACP Image Award, and the Teen Choice Award among others.
Her novel On the Come Up has been adapted into a film by the same name and directed by Sanaa Lathan who also stars in the movie. The movie also stars Noa Dior Rucker, and Jamila Gray. The film was released both in limited theaters and on Paramount+ on September 23, 2022.
