Anderson Cooper

Anderson Cooper (Anderson Hays Cooper) was born on June 3rd, 1967 and is currently 57 years old. Anderson Cooper was born in New York, New York, USA. Cooper attended Yale University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science.

Anderson Cooper is an American journalist and author. As an anchor in CNN, Cooper hosts the Anderson Cooper 360° and also the Anderson Live. He has won two Peabody Awards and 18 Emmy Awards as well as an Edward Murrow Award. His articles have been featured on several outlets such as Details Magazine.

Cooper’s 2006 memoir Dispatches from the Edge explores his life in Africa, Sri Lanka, Iraq, and Louisiana. Some of the proceeds from the sale of the memoir were donated to charity and the book was a Bestseller in The New York Times.

Subsequently in 2017, Cooper co-authored The Rainbow Comes and Goes memoir which recounts their common past and Cooper’s turbulent childhood. The book was a bestseller on multiple platforms upon publication.

Cooper’s book Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty is an interesting story which kicks off with Jan Aertsen van der Bilt who arrives as an “unfree” servant in New Amsterdam (now NYC). The story explores the details of his descendants including the famous Commodore who was born two generations later and ends with Gladys at The Breakers in Rhode Island.

Cornelius Vanderbilt born in 1794 leaves school at 11 to work on the water. His work is to transport vegetables and people between Staten Island and Manhattan. He starts his own ferry business a few years down the line. The older boatmen nickname him “the Commodore” and the name sticks. Commodore is a clever but stubborn man willing to take big risks to make more money. For example, he sees a chance to make more money during the 1812 British blockade and isn’t afraid to strike deals with the British. He perfects the art of breaking monopolies which is something the country could use more of.

Commodore’s son Billy takes over the railroad empire which doubles the family fortune. However, his uncontrolled spending also marks the start of the family’s wealth decline.

In addition, Commodore’s favorite grandson, Cornelius II finishes building The Breakers in 1895 and William Kissam is accepted into New York society following Mrs. Astor’s rules.

Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty is a detailed and honesty narrative which gives the readers a fresh glimpse of the Vanderbilt dynasty. It also explores the myth of American success that success comes from hard work though there’s so much happening behind the scene than most realize.

The book also captures the time period well right from the period of New York expansion from a small settlement to a mighty and wealthy city. Overall, this is a story of the people who shaped the rise and fall of the Vanderbilt dynasty.
