Alan Cumming
Alan Cumming was born on January 27th, 1965 and is currently 60 years old. Alan Cumming was born in Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland. Cumming attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
Alan Cumming is an actor, presenter, and writer. He has won 2 Emmys, 2 Tonys, an Olivier, and a BAFTA Award for his screen and stage performances.
He made his TV debut in 1984 on
Traveling Man, before he went on to later appear on the Scottish TV series
Take the High Road, Taggart and
Shadow of the Stone. Alan made his film debut in Passing Glory, a short film by Gillies MacKinnon, in 1986.
He’d have his breakthrough TV role as Bernard Bottle in
Bernard and the Genie, which was a Richard Curtis scripted movie where he starred with Rowan Atkinson and Lenny Henry.
Alan went on to star as Sebastian Flight (a flight attendant) in
The High Life in 1995. The series was written by Alan and his co-star Forbes Masson, which continued an acting-writing partnership they’d developed ever since their days in drama school.
Alan has said that his tough childhood taught him how to act by needing to suppress his own emotions and feelings around his dad when he was just a little boy. He’s described himself as being a voracious reader as a kid, especially of
The Famous Five series by Enid Blyton.
Not My Father’s Son: A Memoir is a 2015 Audie Award, Autobiography/Memoir. Painful and dark memories can be like a cage. Or in Alan’s case, they can get packed in a box, stuck in the attic to just be forgotten. Until one day when the box explodes and all of the memories flood back in terrible detail. He grew up in the grip of a guy that held his family hostage, somebody who meted out violence with frightening ease, who waged a silent war with himself which sometimes spilled over onto everybody around him. He was Alex Cumming, Alan’s dad.
TV producers approached Alan in 2010 to appear on a genealogy show, he agreed enthusiastically. He hoped to solve a mystery which had long cast a shadow over his family. His maternal grandpa had vanished into the Far East after WWII.
With wit, humor, and incredible insight, he seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating tales from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as celebrated actor of TV, film, and stage. At times deeply moving, at others suspenseful, however always honest and brave, this is a powerful story of embracing the best aspects of past and pushing the darkness aside.
