The only Ace Atkins novel I’ve read thus far is ‘Lullaby.’ I would like to sit here and say that Robert B Parker became lazy later in his career. I wouldn’t mind arguing that he started repeating his themes and manifesting his boredom by sucking the life out of his hero’s personality.
However, I can’t say any of those things because I never read the original Spenser novels, which is why I also can’t agree with the people who praised Atkins for accurately replicating Parker’s voice.
I was convinced that I had to read the original Spenser series to enjoy Atkins’ book because every review I found compared ‘Lullaby’ to Robert B. Parker’s work. But then I read ‘Lullaby’ and enjoyed it. Now, I think I’ll finish Atkins’ Spenser books before jumping back to the ones Parker wrote.
