I keep vacillating back and forth between Mark Lawrence and Joe Abercrombie. Every time Abercrombie appears in a discussion, I immediately hail him as the king of grimdark.

But whenever I see my copy of Emperor of Thorns, I cannot help but displace Abercrombie from the throne in favor of Lawrence. The Broken Empire series blew me away when I first read it.

I had never encountered anyone like Jorg. He was a villain. That was obvious. The character did not hesitate to rape and kill. And yet, I couldn’t stop cheering for him. It was such an odd experience.

I haven’t seen anyone recreate Jorg in fantasy. Yes, I have come across plenty of morally gray protagonists over the years. But none of them have Jorg’s charm.
