I don’t know if I ever truly appreciated historical fiction before discovering Ben Kane. I always imagined historical fiction novels as a series of lecture notes that an author transformed into a cohesive narrative and then arranged in chapters.
And I suppose that description is accurate, for the most part. But I somehow failed to realize that novels in the historical fiction genre told actual stories with a proper plot, well-developed characters, and action scenes.
I have a decent understanding of Roman history. And yet, I was still captivated by the forgotten legion books. I don’t know if all historical novels are like this or if Ben Kane is unique. Either way, I can’t recommend him enough.
I am enjoying “Spartacus The Gladiator” which I blindly grabbed out of the library. I never knew this author had so many books about the “olden” days. I hope to read some more.
