The Sharpe series of novels was adapted into the Sharpe television series for ITV. The series starred Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe and Daragh O'Malley as Patrick Harper. Despite being based on the series, some of the episodes are original stories not based on any books. The series ran from 1993 to 1997, but came back in 2006 for a two-parter with Sean Bean reprising ht role. The success of Sharpe's Challenge led to another two-parter, Sharpe's Peril. Cornwell enjoyed the portrayal of Sharpe by Bean so much that he dedicated his 12th book in the series, Sharpe's Battle, to him. The dedication said that when he writes Sharpe, he hears Sean's voice. The Last Kingdom is another adaptation of Cornwell's work. The series is based on The Saxoon Stories series of books. The series premiered in 2015 and aired for five seasons on the BBC. It would later move to Netflix. Actors on the show included Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred, David Dawson as King Alfred, and Emily Cox as Brida. The fifth season was the end of the series, but a full length film has since been filmed for Netflix entitled Seven Kings Must Die. Each season of the show was based on a novel or multiple novels, but signifcant changes were made to the plot along the way.

One of the best parts of Bernard Cornwell’s Arthurian legend is the underlying battle between the new and the old. It is the best trilogy on Arthur there is. The Winter King is the very first book I checked out of his, and quickly grabbed the rest of the books and have been a fan ever since then. These are written in a realistic way to portray what it was truly like, without all that shining armor and lightning bolt magic like so many of the others have in them.
Bernard is unique in the way he puts you into the moment and embellishes with wonderful details.
Forget Game of Thrones. Sit yourself down, pick up the remote, turn your TV on and watch The Last Kingdom. No, it doesn’t have dragons or ice zombies. But you won’t find better character development or political machinations.
While people the world over sang the praises of Jon Snow, my friends and I were too busy buzzing about the badassery of Uhtred, son of Uhtred. This show is a masterpiece. And yet, I would argue that the novel is better.
Cornwall writes historical fiction. While the show doesn’t necessarily alter the historical details in Cornwall’s books, I found it so much easier to understand the history of England when I consumed the story in book format. I have to assume that Cornwall took some liberties with the historical figures and events. But from what I’ve heard, there’s more truth than fiction in his stories.
Couldn’t agree more, among the best series I’ve read & watched (though I did enjoy the Game of Thrones too)! I didn’t expect to like the books as much as I did, but couldn’t put them down. And the show was addictive!
I highly recommend both “The Last Kingdom” show and the book series the show was based on as both are so engaging and well-written. The story is written in the historical setting of how England first became England and the book series just made me want to learn more of the actual historical events. The author does such a good job of depicting compelling characters, conveying exciting battle scenes, injecting humor and providing perspective in regard to the influence of religion, power and politics on how the events unfold. I just loved the lead character, Uhtred, and following him with his friends throughout the books and show was so entertaining, just left me wanting more. Definitely one of the best historical fiction book series I’ve come across.
