The Prayer Box by Lisa Wingate is a novel I have read and reread over the years – yes it is that good. Interestingly, I read The Sea Keeper’s Daughters the last of the series first and it was so enthralling that I started reading the novels from the beginning.
I like The Prayer Box since I got to follow the transformation of Tandi who goes from a wreck to a new stronger person who refuses to let the past determine her present and future. While she is not a good mother, she is determined to improve and turn her life around.
I have always enjoyed novels with parallel story lines and this was particularly good. The work manages to avoid becoming too saccharine even though some of the characters were annoying at times.
Even though I initially wrote that you could read any of the novels of the Carolina Chronicles series as standalone, I now think you would get more enjoyment from reading them in order since the characters recur in several of the novels.
When I think of historical fiction, Lisa Wingate is not the first author that comes to mind. In fact, when I think of historical fiction, my imagination jumps to medieval times.
But Wingate’s books are closer to contemporary times (sort of). I know she doesn’t always write novels set in historical eras. But I only know her from books like ‘Before We Were Yours’ and ‘The Book of Lost Friends’ that tackle events set in previous centuries.
Wingate stands apart because, sometimes, she runs the risk of being too sugary. But she never crosses the line. Her novels are never quite as sappy as their synopses suggest.
