Michael Lewis: TV/Movies Based on Books
In 2011, the novel Moneyball was made into a movie. Starring Brad Pitt as Billy Beane and Jonah Hill as his assistant, it is generally accepted as one of the greatest baseball movies that have ever been made. The film was directed by Bennett Miller from a screenplay by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin. It was a critical success, earning nominations for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.
Another sports book by Lewis was turned into a film, 2009's The Blind Side. The film starred Sandra Bullock as Leigh Anne Tuohy, Tim McGraw as Sean Tuohy, and Quinton Aaron as Michael Oher. The movie was a big hit at the box office with a $309 million dollar gross. The performance of Sandra Bullock was highly praised and lead to her winning the Academy Award for Best Actress, the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.
Bullock actually turned down the role originally as she did not believe that she could play a devout Christian. However, after meeting with the real Leigh Anne Tuhoy she decided that she could. She ended up taking a pay cut from her normal rate in exchange for a cut of the profits. That seemingly worked out well for her as the film was a major success.
The Big Short was the third book by Lewis to be made into a film. The film was directed by Adam McKay and had an all-star cast, including Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt. The movie uses many unconvential storytelling techniques including multiple breaks of the fourth wall in order to explain some of the more complicated aspects of the financial collapse that the movie portrays.
The movie was a financial and critical success. It earned multiple award nominations and the screenplay for the film won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. The Big Short was also extremely historically accurate as they didn't do much if any dramatization of the book's events.
