A relative described Jodi Picoult’s novels as chick-lit, which, to my ears, meant that her books were primarily targeted towards women. Having read them, I don’t know if that is true.
I was inclined to agree after reading ‘My Sister’s Keeper.’ The book was well-written, but it also felt emotionally manipulative. I did not appreciate how Picoult was fighting to artificially tag at my heartstrings.
Every other novel I’ve read since then has felt more subtle and measured in the way it tackles complicated subjects. It is not difficult to understand why so many people love this author. She is not afraid to wade into the most challenging corners of human existence. She touches on topics that most fiction writers avoid like the plague, which I appreciate.
I just finished reading “Change of Heart”. Wow, it was a book that really makes you think. A carpenter working on the house of a police officer and young daughter is accused of killing them leaving the pregnant wife alone. He is on death row for eleven years and now has the date of his execution. He wants to donate his heart to the woman’s child who needs a transplant. I highly recommend this novel.
I read Handle With Care years ago. I wouldn’t classify it as chick lit, however it did try hard to tug at the heartstrings. I haven’t read any other of her works.
I have not read many of Jodi Picoult’s novels but have always thought of them as fluff. I just finished House Rules and found it good reading. I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I expected too much info about Asperger’s syndrome – there was a lot but it worked in ok with the story. Characters were good and the underlining story about a murder kept my interest.
Sing You Home – The author covers aspects of music therapy which I found quite interesting. A more prevalent subject is invitro procedures, homosexuals and gay marriage. Regardless of your beliefs on any of the subjects, the book is tastefully written and interesting.
I am always amazed at how topical Jodi’s books are; they always speak about subjects that are relevant and important, and broach very interesting discussions. Some are difficult to read, some intriguing, but they are always of interest to me.
