The 2022 Booker Prize shortlist has been announced, as reported by The Guardian.
The Booker Prize is a British award that until recently, only Commonwealth (plus Irish, South African and Zimbabwean) citizens were eligible. However, as of 2014, it is now open to all English-language novels. This makes it noteworthy that Alan Garner is the only British author who made the shortlist.
Also of note is that Alan Garner, at age 87, is the oldest author to ever be shortlisted for the award. If he is to win, he will receive the prize on his 88th birthday.
The Booker Prize comes with a monetary prize of £50,000 ($69,000 USD). One of these six shortlisted authors will be announced on October 17th:
The Booker Prize has gone through several evolutions over the years. As mentioned earlier, it was originally only for authors from specific countries. It began as the Booker Prize for Fiction in 1969, and was renamed the Man Booker Prize in 2002 due to being sponsored by the Man Group. It is now sponsored by Crankstart.
If you are interested in the longlisted authors who are no longer up for the award, we posted the longlist for 2022 in July.
