Stars such as Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, Mykelti Williamson and Sally Field played in the film. Although the film is based on the novel by Winston Groom it differs substantially, certain parts of the novel were skipped as well as several aspects to Gump's life that do not occur in the novel were added, such as his needing leg braces as a child and his run across the United States. There are several interesting facts about the film such as, John Travolta was originally asked to play Forrest Gump but he passed on the opportunity, Tom's younger brother Jim Hanks is his acting double in the movie for the scenes when Forrest runs across the U.S, and Tom's daughter Elizabeth Hanks appears in the movie as the girl on the school bus who refuses to let young Forrest sit next to her. The film was released in the United States on July 6, 1994. Forrest Gump became the top-grossing film in America released that year and earned over US$678.2 million worldwide during its theatrical run, making it the second highest-grossing film of 1994, the first being the animated film . Forrest Gump won Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Director, Best Visual Effects, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Film Editing at the 67th Academy Awards. The film was also nominated for six Saturn Awards and won two for Best Fantasy Film and Best Supporting Actor. In December 2011, Forrest Gump was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress' National Film Registry.
Since the release of Forrest Gump a sequel had been in the works, due to the success of the first book and film but was delayed after the September 11 attacks, the script for the sequel was submitted on September 10, 2001, a day before the attacks. In 2007, Paramount took another look at the project, but nothing came of it.
