William Clegg
William Clegg QC is a lawyer in England that specializes in serious crime. William has fought more than 100 murder cases, more than any other English barrister that practices law.
William decided that he wanted to become a barrister while he was still at school while he watched
Perry Mason episodes on TV. He always enjoyed acting in school plays and debating, and the theatrical side of the job is what first attracted him to the profession. But an interest in the law, as opposed to advocacy, didn’t really develop until he was an undergrad at Bristol University when he appreciated for the first time just how the combination of advocacy with law could be used to win cases.
He’d never considered writing a book, and was totally dumbfounded when Michael Hickman, from Canbury Press, came to see him and asked if he’d accept a commission to write
Under the Wig. William had a number of moments when he questioned the wisdom of the entire exercise, however in the end he’s been very pleased with the finished product and astonished by the reception it’s gotten from critics.
William finds that he is not surprised by the circumstances of any individual murder, however what does surprise him is the reaction of some of those that have been bereaved. In some cases, he’s known real sympathy for the murderer’s family, forgiveness by other bereaved families, and a true desire to help avoid similar tragedies with other people. He finds it to be quite a humbling experience.
In
Under the Wig: A Lawyer’s Stories of Murder, Guilt, and Innocence, a vivid memoir, William revisits some of his most intriguing and notorious trials, from the acquittal of Colin Stagg to the murder of Jill Dando, to the man given a life sentence due to an earprint and the first Nazi war crimes being prosecuted in the UK.
The whole time he lays bare the secrets of his profession, from the nervous moments just before a verdict is brought back and the rivalry among barristers. And how our right to a fair trial is now at risk. This book is for anybody that wants to know the reality of a murder trial.
Turn off the TV dramas and plunge right into the criminal law in action.
How can you speak up for somebody being accused of a savage murder? Or sway a jury? Or get a judge to drop a case?
William’s goal with the book was to demystify the work a defense lawyer puts in.
