Walter J. Boyne
Walter J. Boyne was born on February 2nd, 1929. Walter passed away January 9th, 2020 at 90 years old. Walter J. Boyne was born in East St. Louis, USA. Boyne attended Washington University in St. Louis.
Walter J. Boyne was a United States Air Force officer, combat veteran, Command Pilot, aviation historian, and wrote more than 1,000 magazine articles and 50 books. Walter was the director of the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution and was the Chairman of the National Aeronautic Association.
Walter first found his interest in writing while attending Holy Angels grade school. And his love flying was encouraged by dime novels of the period because of books like
G-8 and His Battle Aces by Robert J. Hogan which portrayed America’s Great War Flying Spy engaged in air-to-air combat.
He figured at this young age that he’d become a pilot for the Air Force and focused his efforts more on achieving this goal. And earned numerous scholarships which enabled him to attend Washington University in St. Louis.
In May of 1951, after spending 2 years in university, he entered the US Air Force’s Aviation Cadet program, learning a profound respect for the enlisted grades of the military. He entered flight school in November of 51 and became the first of his class to solo. He was awarded his wings as an Air Force Pilot and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force on December 19, 1952.
Walter started his writing career in 1962 while he was still in the Air Force, having grown tired of the repetitive aviation articles of the period, he decided to write about some lesser known airplanes and people beginning with an article on the Crutiss P-36. His article got accepted by a British magazine that paid him $29, which was a moment of special pride for the new author.
The Yom Kippur War is a spellbinding chronicle about the international chess game which played out in October of 1973. It’s a tale of military might and diplomacy which accounts for numerous dilemmas faced in modern Middle East.
It’s typically called the Yom Kippur War. Sometimes the October War. The players that surround it are familiar: Murbarak and Sadat, Sharon and Meir, Kissinger and Nixon, Dobyrnin and Brezhnev. It was a war which brought Jew and Arab into a vicious conflict against each other. A war where Israel just about unleashed her nuclear arsenal and set 2 superpowers on this treacherous course of nuclear escalation.
And it was a war which eventually brought about peace. However a peace fraught with disputed borders, delicate tensions, and this legacy of further bloodshed.
It’s a war that Israel never even thought was possible. Surprised by the excellent execution and fury of the Arab onslaught, and possibly more than just a little complacent, Israel found itself close to losing this war due to its lack of tanks, ammo, and planes. The US after a lot of vacillation, elected to help Israel finally, starting this tremendous airlift (code named: Operation Nickel Grass) which incurred the wrath from the Arab states, and the Soviet Union, their sponsor.
