Ty Cobb, full name Tyrus Raymond Cobb, was an accomplished American professional baseball player who was nicknamed
The Georgia Peach.
Cobb played in
Major League Baseball for 24 seasons, most of which were spent with the
Detroit Tigers. Thereafter, he worked for the
Detroit Tigers as a player-manager for half a dozen years before he moved to the
Philadelphia Athletics, where he finished his career.
During his more than two-decade-long career, Ty Cobb had many achievements. At .366, he has the highest ever batting average in the history of the
MLB. For several years, he had the best batting average in
MLB, even as he won nine consecutive titles.
In 1936, Cobb was admitted into the
Baseball Hall of Fame.
Outside baseball, Ty Cobb was a notable investor who amassed substantial wealth from his investments in
General Motors and
Coca-Cola. However, his reputation has been soiled by allegations of racism and temper.
In the history of the sport of baseball, Ty Cobb stands head and shoulders above most, and his legacy continues to endure long after he retired and even passed on.
In 1961, Ty Cobb published his debut work,
My Life in Baseball: The True Record, alongside Al Stump. He explores the best players and how they hit, steal signs, and run the bases, and then offers advice on how to achieve the same.
He reminisces about how he used to spike opponents on the base paths and the incident of how he was suspended for attacking an abusive fan. His actions were the catalyst for the first-ever strike in the sport and the founding of the players' union.
Ty Cobb got into short stories in 2002 when he published
Memoirs of Twenty Years in Baseball. In the work, the author goes back to his childhood, how he got into the minor league in Georgia, and ultimately in
Major League Baseball.
Cobb talks of the elements that drove his success, including how he maintained his condition, how he trained, how he ran, ate, and slept, and batted under different conditions.
