Tom Hanks is an American actor. He is best known for his roles in
A League of Their Own,
Cast Away, and
Toy Story, and won back to back
Best Leading Actor Academy Awards for
Forrest Gump and
Philadelphia. He has frequently collaborated with such directors as Robert Zemeckis, Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg, and Nora Ephron.
He made his film debut in a low-budget slasher called
He Knows You’re Alone and landed himself a starring role in
Mazes and Monsters, a television movie.
He got his first big role on the ABC TV pilot of
Bosom Buddies, co-starring along with Peter Scolari, with whom he had partnered on
Make Me Laugh, a 70s game show. It never got strong ratings, but critics always gave it high marks.
Tom made a guest appearance on an episode of
Happy Days called “A Case of Revenge” where he met Babaloo Mandel and Lowell Ganz who were writing the movie
Splash. They suggested to Ron Howard that he consider Hanks for the movie. He was first considered for the part that later went to John Candy, that of the lead character’s wisecracking brother.
Nothing in Common (a movie he co-starred in with Jackie Gleason) helped Tom stretch as an actor, as it forced him to extend from comedic roles to dramatic ones. It changed his desires about working in movies. Largely what they were attempting to say. It also focused on people’s relationships, since the movie was about a man and his dad.
Big’s broad success established him as a major talent in Hollywood, both within the industry as an actor as well as a box office draw. He earned his first Academy Award for Best Actor nomination for this film.
The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece is a novel that Tom wrote about the making of this star-studded multi-million dollar superhero action flick and the humble little comics which inspired it.
Part 1 takes place in 1947. One troubled soldier makes an impression on his 5-year-old nephew before promptly vanishing for 23 years.
In 1970, the aforementioned nephew is drawing underground comics in Oakland. It’s here he reconnects with his uncle, and remembers that one comic that he saw at the age of 5, draws a new version with his uncle playing the part of a WWII fighting hero.
Present day. A commercially successful director finds the 1970 version of the comic book and decides to adapt it into a contemporary superhero film.
