Thomas J. DiLorenzo
Thomas J. DiLorenzo was born on August 8th, 1954 and is currently 71 years old. DiLorenzo attended Westminster College where they received a B.A. and Virginia Tech where they received a PhD.
Thomas J. DiLorenzo is an American educator, economist, and author who works for the non-profit think tank Ludwig von Mises Institute, focusing on libertarian thought and Austrian economics.
He spent more than 40 years teaching at prestigious American universities such as Washington University, the University of Tennessee, and the State University of New York.
Much of DiLorenzo’s work is aligned with the Austrian School of Economics. He has also worked at The Independent Institute as a research fellow and at the Mises Institute as a senior fellow.
Thomas J. DiLorenzo is the author of at least 18 titles. His lectures and writings often challenge traditional economic and historical views, as he has criticized centralized government, antitrust laws in the United States, and offered a different perspective on Abraham Lincoln.
He gained popularity for his speaking and teaching events, as well as the online programs offered by the Mises Institute. From his home in Auburn, Alabama, he continues to criticize state intervention and champion individual liberty and free markets.
In 1983, Thomas J. Dilorenzo published the work
Underground Government to explain how governments get around regular budgets and spend money illegally.
He demonstrates how, when governments are limited by debt and taxes, they create off-budget enterprises to spend and borrow without approval. These secret operations are used to obscure accountability and fund projects that were never voted on.
According to the author, this results in a bigger and more expensive government, even as it hides the true cost of government and weakens balanced budget rules.
In his work
Lincoln Unmasked, Thomas J. Dilorenzo asserts that Abraham was not the man many believed he was.
According to DiLorenzo, Lincoln believed black people were inferior and had different motives for fighting the Civil War, rather than putting an end to slavery. He argues that he did not respect the Constitution and was a manipulator who craved a stronger central government.
He also rips into schools and historians whom he accuses of keeping the cult alive by hiding the facts about Lincoln.
In his 2008 work
Hamilton’s Curse, DiLorenzo explores the bitter rivalry between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson, even as he argues that it was the former’s vision that shaped America as it is today.
According to the author, Hamilton believed in a powerful federal government, a national bank, implied powers, and economic systems that catered to the rich and powerful. This resulted in the debt-ridden and bloated government that has come to characterize the United States.
He criticizes Hamilton’s legacy for how it resulted in centralized control, corruption, and massive taxation. Instead, he advocates for a return to the values of Jefferson, where the citizens do the bidding of the government rather than the government doing the citizens' bidding.
