Stanislas Dehaene

Stanislas Dehaene was born on May 12th, 1965 and is currently 61 years old. Stanislas Dehaene was born in Roubaix, France. Dehaene attended the University of Paris VI where he received a master's degree in Applied mathematics and computer science. He also attended the École Normale Supérieure.

Stanislas Dehaene is a renowned author and cognitive neuroscientist who is known for his pioneering work on consciousness, reading, and numerical cognition. He found his inspiration for studying the mind from L’Homme Neuronal by Jean-Pierre Changeaux.

After two years working with Michael Posner as a postdoctoral fellow, he moved back to France to lead the Orsay-based INSERM-CEA Cognitive Neuroimaging Unit. In 2005, he got a job at the Collège de France teaching experimental cognitive psychology.

Stanislas's research informs much of our understanding of human cognition. It was through his works that he introduced the concept of an innate neural basis for numerical intuition.

Taking advantage of patient studies and neuroimaging, he discovered how critical the intraparietal sulcus is to the processing of mathematical calculations.

Dehaene was involved in the formulation of the neuronal recycling hypothesis, and he explained how skills like reading make use of ancient cortical circuits. He discovered that an area in the left occipitotemporal cortex in the brain, which he calls the Visual Word Form Area, was key in fluent reading.

He has published more than five influential books and more than 100 articles. For his work, he has earned many honors, including an Institut de France Grand Prix Louis D and membership in the Académie des Sciences and the American Philosophical Society.

In 1996, Stanislas Dehaene published the work The Number Sense.

In this book, he explains how animals and humans have an innate capacity to understand numbers. He asserts that creatures such as chimpanzees and rats can perform simple math since it is something hardwired into their brain.

Stanislas discusses how memory can be impacted by linguistic influences as he takes the example of how the Chinese can cram more numbers in their heads as compared to English speakers.

He also looks into how brain injuries affect calculation skills, recent studies on neural encoding of numbers, and mathematical savants, thus providing insights into the biology behind arithmetic thought.

Continuing to study the brain, he published Consciousness and the Brain, in which he looks into the generation of conscious thought by the brain and why most of our knowledge is unconscious.

Using psychological experiments and state-of-the-art brain imaging, he explains the activation of specific neurons that make it possible to become aware of hidden highlights nd information that inform our decisions.

It combines philosophy with neuroscience as it provides insights into the future of mind science and the nature of awareness.
In 2023, Stanislas Dehaene published Seeing the Mind.

In the book, he explores the inner workings of the brain he shows how our dreams, feelings, and thoughts arise from patterns of neuron activity. He asserts that the human mind is an electric motif that runs on neuron networks.

It also showcases some cutting-edge imaging breakthroughs in neuroimaging combined with approachable science and historical context to create a bridge between art and science.
