Stan Fischler is best known as an author, broadcaster, and journalist who has covered hockey for more than eighty years.

He is one of the most respected figures in the history of the sport, who has been nicknamed “The Hockey Maven”. Through his storytelling, he made hockey easily accessible to the public through his broadcasts, interviews, and articles.

It was in the 1950s that Fischler began working for the New York Rangers as a publicist before he also wrote for The New York Journal-American and the Brooklyn Eagle.

In 1973, he decided to become a broadcaster and moved to MSG Networks, where, for more than 40 years, he covered the Devils, Islanders, and Rangers. From post-game interviews to rinkside analysis, Stan Fischler made hockey come alive for millions across the US as he reported on at least eight Stanley Cup championships.

For his work, he earned several Emmy Awards for his feature programming and sports reporting. Outside of his work on TV, he penned more than 100 books on the game of hockey. His works have been published in the likes of The Hockey News, The Hockey Encyclopedia, and Sports Illustrated, among others.

Outside of hockey, he wrote popular histories of the transit system in New York, such as The Subway, Downtown, and Uptown. He is also the co-producer of Little Rink, the award-winning documentary, and is the host of Metro Channel’s Subway Series.

One of his most popular works is the 1995 published Cracked Ice, in which he provides an insider view of the troubled NHL during the 1990s.

Fischler looks at the tensions and conflicts in the league, including changing business demands, players vs owners, expansion teams, big money, and financial pressures.

The author draws from years of interviews and reporting to show how personalities, economics, and politics destabilized the NHL. He tells the stories of fan discontent, unhappy players, arena issues, contracts, and courts, and how modernization clashed with tradition.

It is a behind-the-scenes look into the challenges that the sport had to deal with during years of transition and how proper management of the turmoil was critical in ensuring the future of hockey.

In 2016, Stan Fischler published Rangers vs Islanders, in which he tells of the on-ice beef between the Rangers and Islanders.

He covers the major happenings from the playoff meetings of the 70s and 80s, the shootout between the pair in 2005, the infamous 1975 playoff series, and the controversial move to Brooklyn by the Islanders in 2014.

In addition to all the action on ice, the work also includes the most important off-ice moments that put the legendary rivalry into perspective.
