SPAMis an encounter between a bright young girl from an immigrant family and a cynical and curmudgeonly B&B owner (named Nelson). The young girl, along with her mom, become unexpected guests in the morning after the Grenfell Tower fire. This fire left them displaced because their apartment was burned in the fire.

He is a creature of habit with his OCD tendencies, however at the last moment, he extends just a bit of grace to this child. It’s pretty realistic how Nelson helps them without being the slightest bit polite.

The story includes some great character studies and it’s nice to see the bit of hope at the very end of the story where people are able to change for the better. It’s impressive just how nuanced Nelson is as a character in so few pages, with his apparent struggles are crucial to him feeling fully three dimensional. His guileless and precocious tenant is quite the apt foil for Nelson. But she’s also a fantastic stand in for the reader, who has to wonder how pulled pork cup a noodle be suitable for Muslim.
