Delany was the second-born of ten siblings born to the first Black Episcopal bishop in the United States, Henry Beard Delany. The family made their home on the grounds of the Raleigh-based St. Augustine School, where Black Pride and education were core tenets in their life.
Sarah L. Delany made history as the first African American to ever teach domestic science at a high school in New York. For much of her career, she fought against gender expectations and racial barriers with quiet dignity and determination.
Alongside Annie Elizabeth Delany, her younger sister who is a fellow activist and dentist, she would become popular when she published her first memoir,
Having Our Say. The work would then become a TV film and Broadway play in addition to being a bestseller.
