Sammy Lee Davis

Sammy Lee Davis was born on November 1st, 1946 and is currently 79 years old. Sammy Lee Davis was born in Dayton, Ohio, USA.

Sammy Lee Davis is an American soldier that served in the US Army during the Vietnam War and got awarded the nation’s highest military medal for valor: the Medal of Honor.

Sammy’s family had a long tradition of military service. His dad Robert served in World War II, his grandpa served in Spanish-American Ward, and his brothers Hubert and Darrell served in Korea and Vietnam respectively.

He went to Manteca High School in California, where he was a member of the diving and football teams. He also took part in Sea Scouting in Stockton. After his junior year of high school, his family moved to Indiana, and he graduated from Mooresville High School in 1966.

Sammy enlisted in the US Army from Indianapolis, Indiana in 1965.

He was subsequently promoted to sergeant and was given the Medal of Honor by President Lyndon B Johnson. At the ceremony, he played “Oh Senandoah” on his harmonica in memory of the men that he had served with in Vietnam.

He retired in 1984 as a result of his war time injuries.

In 2010, he helped celebrate the 100th birthday of the Boy Scouts of America at Arlington Park. He’d entered the scouts when he was 9. Sammy’s also been honored by the Joe Foss Institute for his dedication to serving America.

You Don’t Lose Til You Quit Trying: Lessons on Adversity and Victory from a Vietnam Veteran and Medal of Honor Recipient is the inspiring true life story of veteran’s advocate Sammy Lee Davis.

November 18, 1967, Private First Class Davis’ artillery unit got hit by a massive enemy offensive. At 21, he resolved to face the onslaught and was ready to die. Quickly he’d have a perforated kidney, a broken vertebra, crushed ribs, his flesh ripped by beehive darts, a bullet in the thigh, and burns all over his body.

Ignoring injuries, he manned this 2 ton Howitzer all by himself, crossed a canal under heavy fire to rescue 3 wounded American soldiers, and continued battling until the enemy retreated. His heroism that day earned him a Congressional Medal of Honor - the ceremony footage of which was used in Forrest Gump.

This book chronicles how Sammy’s childhood in the American Heartland prepared him for the absolute worst night of his life, and how that night set off an entire lifetime fighting debilitating injuries, Agent Orange’s effects, and America that was turning on its veterans.
