I don’t care for history. I don’t think it deserves the attention it gets, which is why historical fiction rarely interests me. And yet, I cannot get enough of the descriptions of streets, houses, rituals, traditions, and even the people of the 1500s in the books Parris writes.
I can practically smell Bruno’s surroundings. This speaks to the author’s incredible ability to immerse us in her settings. Bruno doesn’t do that annoying thing you see in historical fiction where the hero lives in ancient times, yet they keep espousing modern ideas and opinions.
I understand why some authors do that. They want to create enlightened characters to whom contemporary readers can relate. But it breaks the illusion. Parris’ characters are smart enough to see through the manipulations of the political and religious institutions of their time. But you can also tell that their perspectives were shaped by life in the 1500s. This enhances the illusion Parris weaves in her books, making it so much easier to immerse oneself in her stories.
