Russell S. Bonds

Russell S. Bonds was born in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Bonds attended the University of Georgia where he received a law degree magna cum laude.

Russell S. Bonds is a corporate lawyer and author who specializes in military history, especially the Civil War. He has a law degree from the University of Georgia and has worked as an editor for the Georgia Law Review. His debut novel, Stealing the General, was published in 2006 and won a Richard Barksdale Harwell Award as the best Civil War book of the year. Bonds has also written several articles for the Wall Street Journal, newspapers, and other magazines.

Bonds’ book, Stealing the General, is a recount of the daring Civil War mission that would later be known as The Great Locomotive Chase. On April 12, 1862, Union spy James J. Andrews and 19 volunteer soldiers infiltrated Georgia, stole a Confederate steam engine called The General, and raced northward. They aimed to vandalize Southern railroads and open the door for Union forces in East Tennessee.

Their mission was bold and could change the tides of war. Unfortunately, their mission was toppled by a young conductor of The General. The conductor pursued them relentlessly, on foot and later on a train. But then Andrew and his crew ran out of fuel which ended the chase. But the story doesn’t end there. A hunt was organized for the raiders- and not long after, they were captured.

Andrews and seven others were executed while 8 others escaped with the help of slaves and Union sympathizers. Six of the raiders were awarded a Medal of Honor by President Abraham Lincoln for their bravery. They were the first ever individuals to receive this prestigious award.

Stealing the General brings this story to life thanks to his meticulous research and vivid storytelling. His research was based on eyewitness accounts, military records, diaries, letters, official records, and other primary sources. This is a recommended book for anyone interested in military history, civil war, or simply stories of courage and adventure.

Bond’s book War Like the Thunderbolt is about the battle and burning of Atlanta in the summer of 1864. This fight was a turning point that aided in the reelection of Abraham Lincoln, shaped modern military strategy, and doomed the Southern Confederacy.

Russell Bonds takes the readers on an epic journey through the battlefields of Peachtree Creek, Ezra Church, and Atlanta. He weaves together stories of influential and lesser-known figures such as William Tecumseh Sherman, Confederate General John Bell Hood, Benjamin Harrison, Patrick Cleburne, and Carrie Berry.

The book doesn’t only focus on the military campaigns as Bonds also tells of the sad story of Atlanta itself. You will witness the 5-week bombardment, forced evacuations, and the devastating inferno that consumed the entire city.

War Like the Thunderbolt combines simple yet powerful storytelling with sharp military analysis based on fresh research from newspapers, diaries, letters, and other archival materials. It is a must-read book for history buffs or anyone interested in learning more about this chapter of the nation’s history.
